[Bop Basics dress + J.Crew blouse + random turquoise scarf + R. Pally leggings + Miu Miu platforms + some divine intervention. I love the idea of using a silk blouse, undone, as a cardigan/jacket. So chill. Also, I realize leggings are sort of dead and gone, and I should have had on, like, ankle socks or something, but I didn’t feel like shaving, so… yeah.]
I’m not a religious woman. Let us be clear.
If I had a religion, it’d be music, or love, or Rob. I can be spiritual, but mostly, I’m a stubborn ass about it. But right now I need you to take a gander at this beautiful cross. Out of place, almost, yet perfectly at home. I cannot believe it’s been there behind our building all this time and I never saw it once:
[Stack of ties, bracelets, and hair bands, two by Shashi from Shopbop. I suggest you buy, and buy in bulk.]
When I think of church, I think of the South—where I’m from. I think about gospel music. I think about the passion that makes people get up out of their pews and throw their hands in the air. And I think, what’s there in my life that makes me feel that conviction? That burn?
Well, to start—there’s Ray.
I don’t need no ice man / I’m gonna get you a Frigidaire.
When we move way out on the outskirts of town
Whoa, you see / we won’t need nobody always hanging ’round.
While dedicated to the original Ray version that somehow connects directly to my shoulders and causes me to involuntarily shimmy, this ABB version has a raw, gritty quality to it I totally dig.
[The Allman Brothers, Live at Ludlow Garage “Outskirts of Town” cover of the Ray Charles classic.]
p.s. Sorry, this outfit is really nothing special. [“I’ll give it to someone speh-shull…”*] I just really loved how the colors played off of one another, and had been feeling like wearing some moody, cool-toned colors. I tend to usually reach for the more autumnal shades. So there ya go.
p.p.s. I’m not mentally all here. I’m using 3/4 of my brain to procrastinate doing taxes.
*First person to name the song from which this lyric was derived will be mailed an envelope of Eli’s furs, for cloning purposes, of course.
