[My most Selby-inspired shot of my Selby book.]
I’ve loved The Selby for many, many moons. Part of me thinks my original infatuation with photos of artfully arranged knick-knacks morphed into a continued appreciation for his depiction of interesting, socially accepted, cat-loving individuals. You know, “cool” people enjoying the company of felines. Since I tend to think we cat people are tolerated by but secretly cause dog people much dismay.* Like when the cool girls let me hang out with them for a spell in middle school, but got freaked-out looks on their faces when I’d do weird shit like suggest we shave our legs with a sweater pill remover, make up song lyrics about trash cans, or carry a mini tape recorder in my pocket and laugh hysterically while playing clips of TV commercials at our tennis lessons. I’m cool with not being cool in that respect.
So just when I’m starting to get the hang of nonchalance, and carrying on adult conversations that don’t have to do with farts, I have to go and start a blog about caftans. “What the hell is a caftan, anyway?” “Why do you like those,” and “Isn’t that just, like, a muumuu?” have become questions I field quite often. I used to have a canned, polite response, but lately I respond with something like, “Wouldn’t it be great to have a tiger on a leash?”
Then I was flipping through my copy of The Selby Is In Your Place when I came across this cool couple, The Millers—a shoot exclusive to the book. I fell in love with her big doe eyes and grey singlet and their extensive taxidermy collection. But our souls connected halfway through their signature Todd Selby I-write-then-you-write Q&A.
“Jennifer, what are your 8 favorite things to collect?”
N.B. Not sharing this as if to say, “See? I knew all along.” More just a plea to Jennifer to be my friend and/or invite me over to shoot photos of her and her caftans.
Next up: a Selby Cat Retrospective.
*For the record, I love all animals immensely. In fact, I have a list of 10 dog breeds I plan to own before I die. I will break down Rob’s anti-Blood Hound resistance…
