[Mara Hoffman hooded caftan top + Alice & Olivia leather leggings + Dannijo bag + Sam Edelman booties + Banana jacket + Shopbop hat + YSL ring]

If my potential hoarding tendencies had to manifest themselves in any way, I’d prefer it be the hoarding of Mara Hoffman pieces. This short caftan is so brilliant—the hood is genius, and her prints are always fantastic. I remarked that her past season looked sort of space/tribal influenced; whatever season this baby hailed from was definitely Aztec/Candy Express. I love it.

Did you ever see that documentary where the woman fell in love with bridges, and married one? And waited until the cloak of night to fornicate with it? I don’t love it quite that much.

Happy St Patrick’s Day! I know it’s Irish, but it makes me think of Scottish. Which makes me think of that road near Saratoga called Scotch Bush road. Which I immediately remarked upon seeing: “That’s what Scottish women have.”

I hope you don’t think I’m some sort of degenerate after my last post, dudes… I was really just always in the wrong place at the wrong time. And when you’re 20, you don’t think about things like walking out the front door of a bar with a beer in your hand. Let that be a lesson to you St. Patty’s Day revelers tonight!

This is how I’m celebrating: green tight pants and a beer. We’re really blowing it out. (more…)

Groove out on ShopBop’s Retro Roadtrip lookbook. I love how it’s not too contrived, but the vibe comes across! Get me that green dress.

Here are a few of my favorites.

We pass a big farm. Its outbuildings are anchored on a sea of swaying wheat, its white clapboard is molten in the late, hazy light. All three of us, even Carlton, keep quite as we pass. There is something familiar about this place… (more…)

[FP-1 Free People Royal Tassel Cinch Bag, on sale for $19.95]

Been toting this little beauty all over the place, into coffee shops and tiny post offices and across state lines. Ever since I saw m’love Carrie from This Free Bird with one in this post. I mean… tassels. Tassels, hombres.

Get one, or four, before they’re all gone.

p.s. I swoon over this image from the March catalog.

Totally badass spearhead ring designed by Lillian Crowe from La Dama Boutique.

Lillian Crowe spearhead ring, $66.

This is my most combative piece of jewelry. It makes me want to ride a speckled pony across Wyoming. Actually, I feel like I might have mentioned wanting to do just that here on this blog before, and I can’t for the life of me figure out what my damned fascination with it is.

“Why Pinto?” “Why not?”

You know, outside of magical circumstances—like scenes in films such as The Unbearable Lightness of Being and others—it ends up being rare that you come across women, totally alone in their own homes, nevertheless adorned with trinkets and baubles and top hats. Just because they felt like it.

For them to do so, though, to me, is a sign of the endurance of the female enchantment; that there still remains, outside of status updates and bathroom mirror photographs, something about women we will never understand.

Oh, hold on… all this talk about heads reminds me: I got a new hat! That’s right—another slouchy wool hat. [Look, my digits are whirring again.]

Here she is making an appearance at The Bean in Manchester on National Margarita Day, while a girl in the background tries to duck from the excessive Hipstamatic usage of the couple in the corner with 2-day-old iPhones:

[ShopBop oversized cashmere beanie hat, on sale $52.50. Don’t tell me I can get the same one for $4 at H&M; I live in the boondocks, for Christ’s knuckle!]

ShopBop… you and your beanies. Imma move to Antarctica live in Vermont so I can wear them year ’round.

Wait, no no no no no—

My picks from the Nanette Lepore Fall 2011 RTW show.

I don’t know why, but Nanette and I haven’t jived much in the last few years*… and I used to covet every single one of her pieces in my early twenties [and had the trumpet skirt collection to show for it]. I wore NL hook-and-eye silk vests and lace-trimmed pencil skirts in college. While I respect the dedication to a level of formality and femininity in her pieces, I grew out of it, and often have the shortsightedness not to see beyond the way her things are usually styled [thus imagining them on myself].

Like the red lipstick. Lovely, but pas moi. (more…)

So Rob already posted about the amazing, gut-busting Chili Challenge. But there was a different, more clothing-related aspect to the evening, too: unbeknownst to the attending population of Manchester, VT, I was impersonating Karen from Californication. [A brunette, carnivorous one; the vegetarianism suggestion is just me hazarding a conjecture.]

So: button-up blouse w/ a little pizazz + leather belt + flare jeans + clogs + tan leather jacket + scarf + single pendant necklace. Done. (more…)

Just a glimpse at the Mara Hoffman presentation this week. Swoon:

{All images courtesy marahoffman.com}

Beautiful, heavy braiding, the color is magnificent, and I applaud the longer sleeves.

I love watching the evolution of her prints with each season; in fact, this reminded me the time was nigh to scour eBay for past seasons of Mara, which I am wont to do. (more…)

[Alice + Olivia leather panel leggings + Sam Edelman boots + T by A Wang tee + my dad’s vintage L.L.Bean shearling bomber + ShopBop hat I know you all wish I’d retire.]

Rural VT wear!

I have lived in these pants for the last 4 weeks but haven’t gotten around to posting them. I’ve always had a thing for formula dressing, especially when life could use a little simplifying, but am too ADD to stick with it. That’s why the whole life-streamlining thing I mentioned before was so refreshing: in the midst of packing, I stowed away all of my clothes except these pants, boots, hat, and a bunch of drapey t-shirts.

It worked. Anyway, black leather is good for the soul. (more…)

Found my new favorite silhouette for 2011 on Rebecca Taylor’s Fall RTW runway:

{All images courtesy Style.com}

Those sheer pants are fantastic! And I’m snatching up those grey ones the minute I find a pair. Everything about this collection is a vibe I want to get on board recreating.

Love the long tunics over the slim, flowy pants with a statement necklace and a center part; it’s what I’d like to always have on when I open the door to greet guests at a cocktail party. Kind of reminds me of this post(more…)

But I want one in a special, realistic way—like little girls want unicorns or Barbie-sized body proportions.

[Siwy sequined pants + Sam Edelman boots + hat, all ShopBop… + OutofPrint Catcher in the Rye sweatshirt]

For me, this Shopbop Shoptalk post from Amie was one to live by: How to Wear Sequins for Day. Even before I got a pair of my own.

You’ve got to have a strange bone to wear sequined pants. During the day. Let alone in a blizzard on a secluded mountain where no one else is going to see them but yourself. Sock this under the “Rules to Live by in an Arctic Territory: V2”; dressing up makes you feel like a real person when seams in the carpet start talking.

[Trunk LTD t-shirt + DVF skirt from ages ago + vintage squash blossom necklace + Motif 56 cuff]

I’m not one of those Southerners who claims only my state does BBQ best. Or that only the South does it best, for that matter. I mean, I’m partial to it, and all, but all BBQ is excellent given the person making it puts a little heart in it. [Tell me your state does boiled peanuts better than mine, though, and I’ll drag yer ass to a roadside cart on the interstate halfway from Jville to Gainesville and watch you eat a Ziploc baggie full while mosquitoes eat your hide, then beg you to tell me different.]

But mention BBQ and I’m game, regional loyalties aside. This small aberration in the vast, well-paved parking lot of my Southern superiority complex proved helpful to Roberto, who kindly drove to pick up some dinner—pulled pork in a Mason jar from the roadside Smokin’ Bowls soup stand down the hill:

The best of both worlds in one night: staying in and going out. Because going out means driving a few yards down the mountain and over a small hill to get beers at Johnny See Saw’s.

Act I. Staying in.

Rob says “I’ll never get another wine glass,” referring to these Oregon Pinot Noir glasses I got him for Christmas. They are fantastic, by the way.

I was late coming back from Saratoga, where I went to do fun things like return the cable box, deposit checks, mail some things, visit the office for a few hours, and seek out the source a funkdified smell coming from our (empty?) home. Super. Rob met me at the door with a glass of wine and we parked by the fire so I could unwind after an hour+ behind the high beams. (more…)

Quick recap of my passage into my third decade:

[My fantastic new vintage squash blossom necklace.]

I’d go into our riveting match of Pictionary, but I wouldn’t want to paint my family in a light that portrays us as genitalia- or toilet-obsessed. So here I am in a rare forlorn-looking moment. Or maybe I’m ogling the presents on the coffee table. (more…)

I’m about to out myself as a total psycho.

I’m totally obsessed with Karen from Californication. Not just her style, although that’s definitely a draw.

The costume director on Showtime’s Californication proved, through his/her brilliant, formulaic dressing of Karen, that costumes can shape a character as effectively as dialogue. In a sea of beautiful LA women in over-styled looks, tight clothes, and couture, she holds fast. And in a sea of beautiful LA women, she’s the one Hank wants most. I just dig her.

A collection of button-up shirts + 1 jean blazer + 1 tan leather jacket + 1 boho blouse + flare jeans + 1 pair clogs + 3 belts + 1 caftan + 1 gold pendant, 1 turquoise pendant + 1 filmy vintage dress + 1 pair aviator sunglasses + vintage rock t-shirts + 3 colored scarves + 1 hat = effortless. All you need.

Allow me to post a completely indulgent retrospective of Karen’s looks from Season 1.

[Forgive crappy screenshots. And thank you, Netflix.] (more…)

When short suits aren’t [still] putting a totally fresh spin on casual, smart dressing or giving me an excuse to wear shorts almost 7 days a week, they are probably tossing ninja stars into people’s necks or chopping heads off. That’s how badass they are.

Check out a million ways to wear this flying, stabbing combination on Shopbop.

-Carey

p.s. For more on ninjas, kick it back to 2003 and check out this site to get scared and/or pumped-scared.
p.p.s. If you didn’t already know, I’m a fan of this shorts suit look. This was a favorite iteration. But I also did it here, here, here, here… and here, and here.

This is something the guys can understand—bare feet, a pair of tight jeans or corduroys, undone hair and a comfy sweater on your lady. Sexy. Add an oversized wine glass holding the last splash of something special, and the photo lights are destined to start warming.

This is my kind of outfit post.

What’s that cheesy saying about not frowning because you never know who’s falling in love with your smile? How about, put your most fashionable foot forward because you never know what future fashion designer you might inspire?

Tore this cool Q&A with designer Timo Weiland out of my Episcopal High School alumni magazine:

Timo Weiland Q&A Episcopal High School Jacksonville

…there were really stylish members of the faculty and student body. I don’t want to name anyone specifically, but I have distinct inspirational memories of friends and older students I admired from afar strolling the courtyards, open hallways…

Shame on my shitty high school wardrobe! Caveat: we had a dress code. But still. (more…)
